KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT

The Internet Of Things

by Onyeka Okoye

What is Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity—that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.

Various Names – The same concept :

  •  M2M (Machine to Machine)
  •  “Internet of Everything” (Cisco Systems)
  •  “World Size Web” (Bruce Schneier)
  • “Skynet” (Terminator movie)

When it comes to vulnerabilities with IoT, expect them! Vendors may not inform the public about critical issues in their products. Since products at times may be updated or new lines come out, vendors may not necessarily invest in maintaining the security of existing products. The issue of patching mechanism may also be a factor, where they might not even exist for some products as well as layman/technical issues installing patches or firmware updates in Iot products. Larger organizations may also have issues scaling to patch/update IoT related devices, given the size of organization and number of units effected.

Software Development Process

by James Nwachukwu

We can think of a series of activities as a Process.

Software Development Process is a structured set of activities required to develop a
software system. This process usually includes;

  • Specification
  • Design
  • Validation
  • Evolution

A software process model is an abstract representation of a process. It presents a description of a process from some particular perspective.

Generic Software Process Models includes;

The waterfall model

  • Separate and distinct phases of specification and development

Evolutionary development

  • Specification and development are interleaved

Formal systems development (example – ASML)

  • A mathematical system model is formally transformed to an implementation

Reuse-based development

  • The system is assembled from existing components

Key points

  • Software processes are the activities involved in producing and evolving a software system. They are represented in a software process model
  • General activities are specification, design and implementation, validation and evolution
  • Generic process models describe the organisation of software processes
  • Iterative process models describe the software process as a cycle of activities
  • Requirements engineering is the process of developing a software specification
  • Design and implementation processes transform the specification to an executable program
  • Validation involves checking that the system meets to its specification and user needs
  • Evolution is concerned with modifying the system after it is in use
  • CASE technology supports software process activities
