How to think like a programmer — lessons in problem solving

“Just when you think you’ve successfully navigated one obstacle, another emerges. But that’s what keeps life interesting.
Life is a process of breaking through these impediments — a series of fortified lines that we must break through.
Each time, you’ll learn something.
Each time, you’ll develop strength, wisdom, and perspective.
Each time, a little more of the competition falls away. Until all that is left is you: the best version of you.” — Ryan Holiday (The Obstacle is the Way)

The ‘world’s first’ A.I. news anchor has gone live in China

A TV anchor has joined a Chinese news agency, but with a twist: he isn’t human. China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) anchor, a move it claims to be a world first.

“English AI Anchor” debuted Thursday at the World Internet Conference in the country’s eastern Zhejiang Province.

Modeled on the agency’s Zhang Zhao presenter, the new anchor learns from live videos and is able to work 24 hours a day, reporting via social media and on the Xinhua website. “‘He’ learns from live broadcasting videos by himself and can read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor,” the company said in an online statement.

Blackberry is buying Cylance for $1.4billion to continue its push into cybersecurity

BlackBerry was best known for keyboard-totting smartphones, but their demise in recent years has seen the Canadia firm pivot towards enterprise services and in particular cybersecurity. That strategy takes a big step further forward today after BlackBerry announced the acquisition of AI-based cybersecurity company Cylance for a cool $1.4 billion.

Business Insider reported that a deal was close last week, and that has proven true with BlackBerry paying the full amount in cash up front. The acquisition is BlackBerry’s largest ever and it is set to close before February 2019 — the end of BlackBerry’s current financial year — and it will see Cylance operate as a separate business unit within BlackBerry’s business. The company plans to integrate Cylance technology with its Spark platform in the future.

Microsoft allies with Facebook on A.I. software

Microsoft has developed open-source software for crafting artificial intelligence models. But in recent months, the company has changed course, opting to work more closely with Facebook and contribute to the development of Facebook’s own flavor of free AI software.

Microsoft hasn’t made a big deal about the change. But it reflects a willingness to back software that comes from other major technology companies, rather than focusing only on its own platforms.

CREATING WONDERFUL UX WITH PSYCHOLOGY – by Afolabi Ajanaku

Humans only have limited mental capacity and no-one is ever operating at 100%. We are all influenced by the world around us and by how our minds work. As developers / designers we need to be able to understand this and design for it.
This presentation aims to help us understand the modern world we’re developing for, how our website or app will be used in real life and to design for how people live their lives today. The Link to the slide from the talk can be found below.
